Till Da Bell Rings by Khyrie Alleyne

This piece was inspired by Emmett Till’s story.

Till Da Bell Rings

During class,
thought it couldn’t of while envisioning an hour glass,
From exploring all the wrong, up and about POPPED the couldntof song:

Couldntof laughed back in the day
Couldntof grown to see my hair turn grey

Couldntof heard my brother die
Couldntof seen the piercing cry

Couldntof tickled back with lashes as payable fees
Couldntof praise-danced dangling from quiet trees

Couldntof received a face full of shameless spit
Couldntof been trashed like clumps of ghastly-shit

Couldntof slumped around with my head sagging low
Couldntof not allowed my beatific soul to show

Couldntof widened my eyes for misery
Couldntof worshiped Jehovah with validity

Couldntof read a page-less book
Couldntof been that sterile cook

Couldntof accepted brighter-shades of dark and darker-shades of bright
Couldntof overlooked 1+1=0 because it just isn’t right

Couldntof recited an encouraging word
Couldntof battled within a naked herd

Couldntof assured love ones to think big
Couldntof enjoyed life as a normal kid

The hour glass has turned into a watch,
Tick Tock Tock Tick, Swisssshhhh goes the sand in the glass
“Couldntof!” I shout, “My time just wouldn’t last.”
